Positive Negative

Of course.

With just some minor tweaks it'd be very simple to give students all kinds of opportunities to improve their school through subjects like English, Media Studies, Art and Drama. Just make the focus of their work improving their school rather than something hypothetical or distant. Get them to create newsletters, TV shows, blogs, posters, assemblies and devised pieces about the issues they see in their school and how they are going to help deal with them.

With a bit more thought why not get your maths or economics classes looking at the school budget? What does it tell them about what the school values? Would they apportion things differently?

Or how about getting your language classes (including English) to 'translate' your school policies or Governing Body minutes in so that everyone can understand them - putting them into the languages spoken students and their parents, including plain English. Make sure they also have an opportunity to suggest improvements.

Could students (e.g. the school council) direct Technology and ICT projects to make improvements around the school: fixing things, building website, benches, or whatever?

With a bit of creativity anything's possible, these are just a few ideas that spring to mind. What others can you come up?
