It's our way of saying that democracy isn't something that you have to be part of.
Often we see democracy as just voting: voting for someone else to be in power, for someone else to take responsibility.
But voting isn't enough to make something democratic, real democracy enables everyone to share responsibility and have an equal role in shaping their society. A doing democracy is one which not only encourages everyone to have his or her say, but enables them to put their views into action.
Everyone taking action is of vital importance to democracy, not just because it 'gets things done' but because it's when we start to take action that we realise how we have to work together, how my needs might conflict with yours and how my actions can support or hinder yours.
Schools are where most of us have our first taste of democracy, and this experience is formative. We all must ensure that this experience is a reflection of the kind of democracy we want to have, not the kind we feel we are lumbered with.
