All these projects seems very promising. I'm especially interested in the pupil well-being program. Could you provide more details about this project?

I'm just back from a great session with pupils from the primary school where I'm a governor. We're appointing a new headteacher, so I was working with the pupil council to help them decide what questions they'd like to ask the candidates.
As the interviews are next week I can't tell you yet what they decided yet, suffice to say I think the questions are searching an go to the heart of what pupils really want to get out of school (and what all of us who care about education want them to get too).
Whilst the process we went through was far from perfect, there was a process and it covered:
- Privacy/Confidentiality
- Only judging people on the answers to their questions
- Open and closed questions
- What the role of a headteacher is
- What the qualities a head would need to have
- What questions would help us find out if candidates have them
Once the process is finished I'll be writing up a short resource to help other schools ensure that it's a meaningful and useful experience for them.

I am absolutely shocked at the language used by the Daily Mail and Nasuwt.

Young people being listened to is key to putting the massive errors of the past behind us, and allowing all children to have a happy and safe childhood. I completetly agree that in this day and age, empowering young people to have confidence, sense of belonging and shared responsibility within schools and communitites is essential.

To believe that young people have more interest in how someone looks in comparison to adults shows a lack of understanding in young people. I work with a youth council, and I have found young people to be much more open and understanding, and able to see the "real" person than most adults we work along with.

Thank you for linking to my blog.
You make some excellent points here. While I acknowledge there can be problems with involving pupils that is probably down to the briefing they have had and the expectations of the school.
Like with everything else, if it's worth doing ....

I have never had many dealings with the NASUWT, and clearly it is for the best! As I work in a job where young people are encouraged to speak out, share opinions and thoughts both in informal and formal education settings, it seems a shame to think that one of the major support mechanisms in the country is creating a stir in a way which contradicts this.

Young people need to be shown a little respect, and in my experience they give it back. The comments above give no credit where credit is due; to young people or good teachers. It's clearly not only those attending classes who still have some lessons to learn....

This really saddens me, Young People have a right to make decisions on issues that affect thier lives, including having a say on how thier school is run and who works there. I have been interviewed by young people several times and really enjoyed the angle they took. This whole thing implies that young people are not capable of being responsable or making an informed fair decision, give them some credit. I find it very alarming that teachers do not want thier pupils to be empowered and given resposibility, and the genuine opportunity to participate.
Further more, young people know best about what will be effective and benificial too them, young people are already seldom heard as it is, margenalised and represented in a negative light within the media consistantly.
To all of those teachers who think pupils should be seen and not heard- are you sure you are in the right the job?!?!?!?!?!?
