VB: Pupils to set sail on voyage of a lifetime

YOUNGSTERS are riding on the crest of a wave after learning they will experience life as a pirate.

A trip on a tall ship awaits the children of Lever Park Special School in Horwich this summer.

Inspired by the blockbuster Hollywood film, Pirates Of The Caribbean, pupils decided to embark on a pirates project.

School counsellor Carole Darbyshire said: “The school council started talking about the film and pirates. We decided to do a project about the pirates era, which will incorporate slavery, tall ships and the cotton industry of Bolton.” link

School counsellor Carole Darbyshire said: “The school council started talking about the film and pirates. We decided to do a project about the pirates era, which will incorporate slavery, tall ships and the cotton industry of Bolton.”

The school this week learned it has secured £24,000 from the Heritage Lottery Young Roots project to fund a five-day trip on a tall ship around the coast of Scotland.

Mrs Darbyshire said: “The project will culminate in a five-day sail in June and every child will have the opportunity to take part. They will not be passengers on the boat, they will be crewing it. We are all excited about this project. It is a fantastic opportunity for the children.

“They will learn how to sail and how to dive. They ship will stop at islands.”

In the run-up to the trip, pupils will be visiting the international slavery museum in Liverpool. They will learn how to record, edit and produce a dvd of their project.

Once the project is completed children will receive a diving and sailing certificate.

Mrs Darbyshire said: “The young people are leading this project and will develop interpersonal and practical skills.

Headteacher Colin Roscoe added: “This is a unique opportunity for our pupils, who will be able to experience a chance of a lifetime while learning about this formative part of our history.”
