Charles Leadbeater: 21 Ideas for 21st Century Learning

Charles Leadbeater is doing lots of writing and talking about the future of education and learning int his country. He wrote a document, What’s Next? 21 Ideas for 21st Century Learning for the Innovation Unit summing up these views. If you’re interested in his vision, I’ve summarised the document below:

Despite substantial investment in education, attainment has stagnated. The overwhelming determinate of achieving qualifications remains the social class you are born into. Therefore something needs to change.

Derbyshire New Model for School Councils

Pupils and Politics is a document from david Holmes at Derbyshire Healthy Schools which aims to change the structure of school councils across the county. The new model uses the language and structures of the English parliamentary system in an attempt to teach young people about English democracy as well as providing a workable school council. Within the cabinet there are people with responsibility for different departments which are the sub-committees.

New Diplomas

From September thousands of schools will be offering the new Diplomas. I’ve written a summary of what they’re about. School Councils can fit with the PLTS element which is the personal, learning and thinking skills part. JL 20/8/08

Stop your whingeing!

A new book, The Dangerous Rise of Therapeutic Education argues that the focus on emotional expression and building up self-esteem in schools and colleges is ‘infantilising’ students, leaving them unable to cope with life. In an interview in the Times Higher Education Hayes and Ecclestone, of Oxford Brookes University argue that attention paid to emotional intelligence in schools and colleges creates an atmosphere where students and staff are treated as emotionally vulnerable, and this is inimical to traditional academic rigour. The coverage in today’s papers links criticisms in the book to the SEAL programme in schools. Hayes and Ecclestone are calling for a public debate about the emotional state of education. http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk

The Key: One-stop advice shop for Heads

Today’s Education Guardian has an article about www.usethekey.org.uk.

Apparently it’s a portal to a team of researchers who can provide information on all things educational. They provide info about policy, good practice and by the sounds of it, are able to signpost people to supporting organisations.

The portal has been set up by the TDA, our new best friends, and is currently being piloted by 1200 schools and a decision about expansion is due in July.

Someone needs to get in touch and find out what they’re saying about school councils, ensure they refer people to us and ensure they know about the range of services we provide e.g. in-school and cluster training.

Young people set up advice agency (JL –They’re gonna make a fortune! Should we put Sainsburys in touch?)

Children & Young People Now: 30 January 2008

A group of 15- to 21-year-olds is setting up a social enterprise that will advise public services and businesses on engaging with young people, after taking part in a New Deal for Communities scheme.

The 10 young people decided to form the Disc Agency, which opens for business next month, after taking part in a young advisers scheme run by Community at Heart, Bristol’s New Deal for Communities project.

The scheme saw those taking part advise local services and companies on the best way to involve and attract young people. After it ended, the young people decided to continue their work through their own social enterprise.

Co-founder Ricardo Sharry said the Disc Agency would use its profits to bankroll a number of youth projects. “Our social aims include a website with information for young people, a youth advice hotline and an endowment fund for young people,” he said.

Community at Heart helped the young people get the training and support they needed to set up the Disc Agency. Charlene Richardson, Community at Heart’s young people’s programme delivery manager, said: “It just shows how much young people can do.”
