Mark had a meeting with David Regis from SHEU on Friday (Greg joined us for most of the meeting). SHEU has carried out “lifestyle – health and social – surveys with hundreds of thousands of young people for over 30 years”. Local authorities and others pay them to do surveys (as a base line/ monitoring exercise) – the schools participate in return for getting a comprehensive report showing them how they are doing and compare their results with other schools in their area that they can use .

Admissions…
Heard on Radio4 (Boadcasting House) 2 Mar 08 by mj: Tomorrow is A Day. Admissions Day; the long-awaited morning when half a million fretful parents will learn whether their child has got into the secondary school of their choice. For months parents have being saying things ‘We’re hoping he’ll get into this marvellous school just outside Calais. It’ll mean Timmy leaving the house 4.30 every morning to catch the Eurostar, but I think it’s worth it don’t you…’
£6M for young leaders
29 February 2008
The Government wants to unlock the talent of young leaders so that more young people are able to champion local and national issues and to become positive role models for their communities.
Launching the vision today the Government is encouraging more young people to become leaders, and committing to help more young people develop and use their leadership skills to help bring about change.
Recognising that today’s young people have enormous leadership potential, the Government has pledged £6million over the next three years to work with dynamic and innovative youth leadership organisations to:
• develop and promote internships with local councillors
• increase opportunities for young people to act as leaders within their communities
• to help young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to overcome the barriers that prevent them from fulfilling their potential
• launch a national campaign to celebrate achievements of young people who have championed causes
• to encourage and support schools to increase leadership opportunities
• advise and challenge Government on involving young people in decision-making at the highest level

RECYCLING ideas have been top of the curriculum for pupils of Longman’s Hill Primary this week.
Teachers and students at the Selby school have spent time researching and collecting data about recycling, and even making their own clothes from recycled materials before performing their own in-house fashion show.
Today’s Education Guardian has an article about www.usethekey.org.uk.
Apparently it’s a portal to a team of researchers who can provide information on all things educational. They provide info about policy, good practice and by the sounds of it, are able to signpost people to supporting organisations.
The portal has been set up by the TDA, our new best friends, and is currently being piloted by 1200 schools and a decision about expansion is due in July.
Someone needs to get in touch and find out what they’re saying about school councils, ensure they refer people to us and ensure they know about the range of services we provide e.g. in-school and cluster training.
Changes Will Reflect Need For Broader Communication Skills
Speaking assessments for GCSE modern foreign languages will change to make them a more accurate reflection of pupils’ ability and their capacity to respond to real life situations, Schools Minister Jim Knight has announced. Link
