Youth Citizenship Commission

One of the articles I found on Voice It1 (see previous post), written by one of the student ‘journalists’ was about the newly created position of Chair of the Youth Citizenship Commission.  This commission will:

  • Examine what citizenship means to young people.
  • Consider how to increase young people’s participation in politics; the development of citizenship among disadvantaged groups; how active citizenship can be promoted through volunteering and community engagement.
  • Lead a consultation on whether the voting age should be lowered to 16.

It has a small budget attached (£6m).  I think we should try to get a meeting with him and see whether he will support the Standard (and maybe more).

Radiowaves.co.uk/voiceit

At my meeting with Futurelab one of the other people there was from synergy.tv. One of their big projects is www.radiowaves.co.uk which allows schools to create their own radio stations for free. This could be a great tool for school councils. An offshoot of this is Voice It! which is particularly about using those tools for campaigning.

SHEU (Schools Health Education Unit)

Mark had a meeting with David Regis from SHEU on Friday (Greg joined us for most of the meeting). SHEU has carried out “lifestyle – health and social – surveys with hundreds of thousands of young people for over 30 years”. Local authorities and others pay them to do surveys (as a base line/ monitoring exercise) – the schools participate in return for getting a comprehensive report showing them how they are doing and compare their results with other schools in their area that they can use .

Admissions…

Heard on Radio4 (Boadcasting House) 2 Mar 08 by mj: Tomorrow is A Day. Admissions Day; the long-awaited morning when half a million fretful parents will learn whether their child has got into the secondary school of their choice. For months parents have being saying things ‘We’re hoping he’ll get into this marvellous school just outside Calais. It’ll mean Timmy leaving the house 4.30 every morning to catch the Eurostar, but I think it’s worth it don’t you…’

SCUK features in very best of journalism

Just saw this, which mentions us, which is nice.

Apparently it was written by a “Stroud News and Journal Reporter”, but there are a few tiny clues that it might actually just be a press release cut and psted onto their website….

Not only have them managed to leave in the ‘Notes to the Editor’ and contact details, but also the ‘Please think before printing this email message’.

What's the point of this blog?

Well, I see it as a place where we can quickly note down our thoughts, experiences and links to news stories relating to education and participation.  Primarily we are doing this for each other (and ourselves), but it may also be of interest to other people interested in school councils and School Councils UK.  In fact I expect the email updates that we will be sending out to funders, members and other partners and supporters will be an edited version of this blog.

I have set up various categories that posts can be put under (they can be under more than one).  We can add to and change these very easily.  I think each of the category names should be self-explanatory, but if they’re not let me know.

I think if you’re going to post a link to another story or web-page it would be really good if you could include a short description of what you’re linking to.  Something like, “A new government iniative to get every school child connected to broadband at home [link]” rather than just a link or, “Any thoughts? [link]”.  We can link to and upload videos, mp3s, etc. in this software, so feel free to do so.

Anyway, let me know what you think and any suggestions you have by making a comment, and then write a post yourself!
