Junior 8 – win a chance to represent the UK at J8 2008

Junior 8 is an opportunity for pupils in your school to deepen their understanding of world issues, share their views on issues affecting children and represent the UK on the world stage. Teams will compete nationally for the opportunity to represent the UK at the Junior 8 Summit in Japan in July 2008.
Groups of four students aged 13-17 can enter as a ‘team’.
Teams put together an entry covering topics such as health, poverty, development and climate change.
The winning team of four will join teams from each of the G8 countries and young people representing each region of the world for the J8 world Summit in Japan between 2-10 July 2008.

Involving young people in governance – new seminars for 2008

There are nearly 900,000 trustees of registered charities and nearly as many members of community groups. Only around 0.5 per cent of these are under 25 years old. We need to do more to ensure that young people are involved in the governance of both the voluntary and statutory sector. But how can we do this effectively?
The Governance Hub has funded NCB to run two seminars with the aim of challenging some of the myths associated with involving young people in governance and leadership. NCB will deliver these seminars alongside The British Youth Council, 11 Million and the Charity Commission to participation officers in local authorities and leads in regional government offices and leaders of voluntary and community sector organisations. National Year of Reading

News item: 08 January 2008

Ed Balls joined the Prime Minister, children, writers, and reading champions at 10 Downing Street today to launch the National Year of Reading. He called for every employer, school, library, college and local authority to get involved and sign up to the National Year of Reading by logging on to the National Year of Reading website

What's the point of this blog?

Well, I see it as a place where we can quickly note down our thoughts, experiences and links to news stories relating to education and participation.  Primarily we are doing this for each other (and ourselves), but it may also be of interest to other people interested in school councils and School Councils UK.  In fact I expect the email updates that we will be sending out to funders, members and other partners and supporters will be an edited version of this blog.

I have set up various categories that posts can be put under (they can be under more than one).  We can add to and change these very easily.  I think each of the category names should be self-explanatory, but if they’re not let me know.

I think if you’re going to post a link to another story or web-page it would be really good if you could include a short description of what you’re linking to.  Something like, “A new government iniative to get every school child connected to broadband at home [link]” rather than just a link or, “Any thoughts? [link]”.  We can link to and upload videos, mp3s, etc. in this software, so feel free to do so.

Anyway, let me know what you think and any suggestions you have by making a comment, and then write a post yourself!
